Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), commonly known as  “EFT” of “tapping,” is a form of psychological acupressure that combines cognitive therapy with energy meridian tapping. Developed in the 1990s by Gary Craig, EFT is based on the premise that negative emotions are linked to disturbances in the body’s energy system. By tapping on specific meridian points while focusing on a particular issue, individuals can release emotional blockages, leading to emotional and physical healing.

How Does EFT Work?

EFT operates on the principles of both traditional  & Western modern psychology. Here’s how it works:

  1. Identification of the Issue: The first step in EFT involves identifying a specific issue or negative emotion you want to address, such as anxiety, stress, or a traumatic memory.
  2. Rating the Intensity: Before beginning the tapping process, individuals rate the intensity of their emotional or physical discomfort on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being the highest level of discomfort.
  3. Creating a Setup Statement: A setup statement is formulated to acknowledge the issue while also expressing self-acceptance. For example: “Even though I feel anxious about my presentation, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
  4. Tapping Sequence: Using the fingertips, individuals tap on specific meridian points on the body while repeating the setup statement and a reminder phrase (a condensed version of the issue, such as “this anxiety”). The primary tapping points include:
  • Karate Chop Point: The outer edge of the hand
  • Eyebrow Point: The beginning of the eyebrow
  • Side of the Eye: The bone on the outside of the eye
  • Under the Eye: The bone under the eye
  • Under the Nose: The area between the nose and upper lip
  • Chin Point: The area between the lower lip and chin
  • Collarbone Point: The junction of the collarbone and the first rib
  • Under the Arm: About four inches below the armpit
  • Top of the Head: The crown of the head

5. Reassessing Intensity: After completing the tapping sequence, individuals re-rate the intensity of their discomfort. This process may be repeated multiple times, focusing on the same or different aspects of the issue until the intensity decreases significantly.

EFT can help address a wide range of mental, emotional, and physical issues, including:

Mental Issues:

  1. Anxiety: EFT can reduce anxiety by addressing underlying fears and worries, helping individuals feel more relaxed and in control.

  2. Self-Esteem Issues: EFT can assist in building self-acceptance and self-worth by reframing negative beliefs about oneself.
